Travis Air Force Base, CA, has been an important part of the US Military for years and a location we have attempted to contact to provide Quilts of Honor for the wounded as they are brought back home. The wounded are flown here and stay about 24 hours or longer before they depart for home or to another hospital. Most of the wounded arriving at Travis are stationed in the area or somewhere in California. Being able to present the Quilts at Travis means the Warrior will have a quilt waiting on his or her bed on their arrival home - how awesome is that!
I had told Cynthia Wheeler from Quilters of Contra Costa County what we would like to do and she said, “Gail, I’ll see if I can find us a way in.” Give Cynthia a job and she is on it! I bet she made over 20 telephone calls to find us a contact. This past Saturday, we made our first trip to Travis Air Base and delivered 20 Quilts of Honor. The crew let us select the quilts for the beds for the three wounded warriors arriving that evening. It was a humbling experience to see our Quilts on those three hospital beds knowing in a few hours they would give comfort to those so deserving.
Lt. Drake, a Clinical Nurse and Megan, Medical Tech, gave us a tour of the unit. They were very impressed with the Quilts. They had never seen Quilts like ours with Presentation Cases. We will now supply them with Quilts of Honor on a regular basis.
The Hospital was beautiful and spotless. The Red Cross had decorated a quiet room for the wounded and included laptops. There was an entertainment room with a large screen TV. They try to provide them with the best for the time they remain at the center.
The Crew is on call for the wounded coming to California and they never know how many they will receive until a day before the flight arrives. Often times they receive hourly updates as Travis is the the last stop on their return to the US.
I want to thank Cynthia for not giving up on her quest. This is what it is all about – all of us working together to continue our mission. All of you who support our warriors and veterans are doing a great job – please keep up your good works.

Very interesting post! Truely..
My daughter-in-law and I made a Quilt of Honor and would like to give it to a wounded serviceman, preferably at Travis AFB. I live in Sacramento. I have no idea how to go about this. Please let us know who to contact to get it delivered to a wounded soldier.
